What garage door repair costs
Published national ranges for a typical garage door repair, the service call, springs, cables, a door off its track, a new panel, opener fixes and a tune-up.
On this page: 5 sections
The figures here are published national ranges from cost guides. They aren't quotes. Each one is a range at least two independent cost guides agree on, and a site that repeats another's figures counts once. Use them to check a price, then ask garage door companies near you what they'd charge for your door.
What a typical repair costs
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| A typical repair | $155 to $3791-3 |
| A service call or diagnostic visit | $50 to $75 a visit4-5 |
Most garage door companies charge a service call or trip fee, and many have a minimum charge for a job, HomeGuide says.4 So ask what the visit costs, and whether it comes off the repair, before someone comes out.
By repair
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Springs replaced as a set | $150 to $350 a door5-7 |
| Torsion springs, both | $200 to $350 a door5-6 |
| Extension springs, both | $120 to $200 a door5-6 |
| Cable repair or replacement | $100 to $3505, 8-9 |
| A door off its track | $200 to $3001, 5 |
| Replacing a panel | $300 to $900 a panel, installed5, 10-11 |
| Opener repair | $100 to $3001, 5, 12 |
| Replacing the safety sensors | $100 to $1905, 13-14 |
| A tune-up | $100 to $240 a visit15-16 |
Torsion springs sit above the door and extension springs run along its sides, and HomeGuide's spring prices are for replacing both.1 Fixr says the springs are almost always replaced as a pair.5
A visit in the evening, at the weekend or in an emergency costs more, the cost guides say.5, 9, 13
Before anyone works on it
A garage door that's working properly stays put when you stop it partway open. If it doesn't, it can crash to the floor, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission says a door that isn't balanced, or that binds or sticks, should be serviced by a professional.17 Keep people and cars out from under it until then.
Prices we don't give
- Rollers and opener belts on their own. The cost guides' ranges for them don't line up, so there's no range two of them agree on. Ask for the price of the part and the labor.
- One spring against two. Only one source without a stated method prices them separately. The cost guides above price the pair.
- Springs on a double door or on two doors. The sources price different things, so the figures can't be compared.
- Commercial overhead doors. Only one cost guide prices them, and the public contracts we found pay by the hour.
What to ask before work starts
- What the service call costs, and whether it's taken off the repair.
- The full price, parts and labor, before the work starts.
- Whether both springs, or both cables, are in the price.
- Whether the company's licensed or registered where your state asks for it. How to check a garage door company has each state's rule.
Each company on this site is listed with its phone number where it has one, so you can call two or three and compare. You can also send a request through the request form.
Ranges compiled from HomeGuide, Fixr, Angi and Thumbtack, and safety advice from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, checked October 2026.
